I’d like something I can install myself, from an established maker(GE etc), and something that has multiple levels of protection. Cost is also very important.
Answer:
Great questions – and there are solutions out there, but yo need to be careful. Times have changed for alarm systems and what they can do. Here are some points to consider when you shop for a system:
1) Some of the larger companies (and ADT is a good example) are not known for their service level. Just do some on-line research on your own to check out their reviews. And if some of these companies charge less, it is often because they offer less!. See next point.
2) The reason you want to shop around is that the only safe system is cellular, meaning it does NOT depend on a phone line or internet connection that can be easily cut by an intruder. When most alarm companies offer cell monitoring, it is a big up-charge for equipment and monthly fee – again, ADT is a great example.
3) You also want the latest features, and the big companies do not offer them: cellular monitoring for no extra fee, same for fire monitoring, remote arm/disarm, email and text notifications, special apps for smart phones, and even video and smart phone functions. This speaks to the levels of protection. Don’t buy the past – you don’t need to!
4) You can get inexpensive state-of-the-art GE equipment and affordable monthly rates from providers who offer more – so you have options.
By the way, you can get a great system that you can install yourself, fully programmed and ready out of the box. That means you can add devices at any time, and even move the system with you. When researching, I again strongly recommend that you look at all the reviews you can find, and Google is a good place to start. Shop hard, and don’t just focus on the big names: there are providers doing a much better job, and you can check them out very easily. Look for safer, smarter, simpler, and more affordable – you will be happy you did!
I’d like something I can install myself, = no installation needed
from an established maker(GE etc), = the original maker – the creator himself
and something that has multiple levels of protection. – depends upon your level of training for it
Cost is also very important. = about 5 to 15 dollars a week depending upon your choices/needs
best & most user friendly home security alarm is called a dog – available for free at most refuges or humane societies everywhere – easily trained – cheap – and very effective even if it is an ankle bitter
we prefer a larger system called a rottweiler – we use them in battalion style – 9 total – no flank unprotected

A lot depends on the neighborhood, and what there is in the house that’s worth stealing. Any indication of security will deter a burglary, making him look for an easier target.
Money being an issue, avoid hooking up to a monitoring system for a monthly fee.
Good luck.
